SCALABRINI FATHERS
The Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles – Scalabrinians – is an international religious community of missionaries, founded in 1887 by The Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini, to assist the migrants who were crossing the Atlantic to reach the Americas. While the first Scalabrinian mission in Africa was established in Cape Town in 1994, members of the Congregation are currently active in 30 countries, exercising their ministry in formation houses, parishes, missions, chaplaincies, reception centres, shelters for the migrants, and at seaports, as they endeavour to be present where migrants are living and moving.
SCALABRINI CENTRE
Perceiving migration as an opportunity, the Scalabrini Centre is committed to alleviating poverty and promoting development in the Western Cape while fostering integration between migrants, refugees and South Africans. In providing our assistance, we advocate respect for human rights and use a holistic approach that considers all basic needs. Services are offered through six main programme areas: Advocacy, Employment, Access Programme, Welfare, English School, Women’s Platform and Unite, reaching about 2000 people per month through a team of over 25 staff members and 40 volunteers.
SIHMA
The Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) conducts research that contributes to the development of informed policies and promotes the rights and dignity of migrants and refugees in Africa.
Besides the research focus, SIHMA publishes an accredited academic Journal (AHMR) as well as other articles and popular reviews on migration and provides formation and skills building training courses for pastoral agents of migration. Part of a large network with universities, NGOs and other organizations and institutions, SIHMA promotes events, workshops, and conferences on human mobility in Africa, disseminating their findings through a website and social media.
